Planned Giving Spotlight: Will Enloe ('90)

Darlington has been a part of Will Enloe's ('90) life since primary school. A second-generation alumnus, there was never a doubt that he would spend his formative years at the Lakeside, but even after graduating in 1990, he has remained an active member of the school community.

"Will is past president and member of Darlington's Alumni Council. He has volunteered his time to raise money for the Annual Fund. He gives annually at the J.J. Darlington level, and his support of the school's planned giving program has earned him membership to the J. Daniel Hanks Sr. Heritage Society," said Headmaster Tom Whitworth. "Will gives generously of both his time and resources, and Darlington is fortunate to have such a friend."

Looking back, he credits Darlington with teaching him many of the professional values that are important to him today. "Teachers like Sam Moss ('63) taught me the importance of being thoughtful toward others, not for personal gain but to truly benefit another. I try to live this lesson each day," Enloe said. "Gordon Neville ('55) introduced me to the '5 Ts' of preparedness. Randa Mixon, now retired, was an inspiration to me as well. She loved teaching, and she taught me that I should enjoy what I do each and every day. I can honestly say that I do."

Enloe humbly said he simply believes in the old adage, "To whom much is given, much is required." "As a graduate of Darlington, I feel truly blessed," he said. "Giving back brings me joy, and it's so easy to do. As an alumnus, I have the responsibility and the fortuity to ensure that today's Darlington student receives the same opportunities as I did."

Darlington is a part of Will Enloe, and through a planned gift in his estate, he will forever be linked to the school's legacy. "There is a widespread belief that you have to be 'older' to make a planned gift, but this is simply not true," said Mary Hight Sawhill ('96), director of planned giving. "People of all ages are able to gift in a way that provides for future support of Darlington."

Enloe, for example, has gifted a portion of his retirement account to Darlington. This type of planned gift is easy for someone like him, who has a retirement account through his employer, is charitably inclined, and would like to leave his mark on the world. Additionally, his assets will not be eaten up by taxes.

"It is clear that retirement planning incentives have been designed to create funds for retirement, but not to create funds for inheritance," Sawhill said. "However, just as our tax laws encourage retirement planning, they also contain attractive benefits when charitable organizations like Darlington are on the receiving end of qualified retirement plans."

"A retirement account passed on to family or friends can easily be a burden to them with the estate and income taxes they will have to pay on this asset," Enloe said. "By gifting my retirement account to Darlington and other charities, my estate will not pay taxes on this gift. That is a relief to me. And the fact that my gift can keep on giving to Darlington long after I am gone is a source of pride for me. I love Darlington, and it will always be a part of my life."
